The first negative list issued for defense imports last year included 101 items.
Officials said that the import of 108 items included in the second negative list will be banned from December 2021 to December 2025.
He said that the second list has been prepared by the Defense Ministry after several consultations with the public sector and private defense manufacturing industries.
The first list of negative items for defense imports included some high technology weapon systems such as artillery guns, assault rifles, fighter ships, sonar systems, cargo aircraft, light combat aircraft (LCH), radars.
Officials said the second negative list for imports has been cleared by the defense minister.
Defense Ministry said, “On the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards self-reliance and to give a boost to the domestic defense industry, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has notified the second ‘Positive Indigenization List’ of 108 items by the Department of Military Affairs. The proposal has been approved.
The ministry said that all the 108 items will now be procured from indigenous sources as per the provisions of Defense Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020.
Over the years, the government has taken several measures to boost the domestic defense industry.
Defense manufacturing business is estimated to be Rs 1.75 lakh crore by 2025 in the new Defense Procurement Policy of the Ministry of Defense.
